PASSENGER (P) ENDORSEMENT FAQS

Q: Do I need a CDL for a church bus or shuttle van?

A: It depends on the vehicle.

A CDL with the appropriate Passenger (P) Endorsement is generally required when operating a vehicle designed to transport 16 or more people, including the driver. CDL requirements may also apply based on the vehicle's weight and type of operation.

The fact that a vehicle is called a church bus, shuttle, or passenger van does not by itself determine the licensing requirements. Applicants should verify the requirements for the specific vehicle they intend to operate.

Q: How long does it take to add a Passenger (P) Endorsement?

A: Completion time varies based on your current CDL status, Commercial Learner Permit (CLP), applicable ELDT requirements, preparation, proficiency, selected services, and Texas DPS appointment availability.

Applicants adding a Passenger (P) Endorsement to an existing CDL are generally required to obtain the appropriate CLP and hold it for at least 14 days before taking the applicable CDL skills test.

Get Your CDL Quick offers individually available services designed to help applicants prepare efficiently. Individual completion and testing timelines cannot be guaranteed.

Q: Can I add a Passenger (P) Endorsement to my existing CDL?

A: Yes. Qualified Class A and Class B CDL holders may add a Passenger (P) Endorsement by satisfying the applicable Texas DPS and federal requirements.

First-time Passenger (P) Endorsement applicants are generally subject to federal Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT)requirements.

The class of CDL and any applicable restrictions will determine the types of passenger vehicles you are authorized to operate.

Q: Do I also need a School Bus (S) Endorsement?

A: A School Bus (S) Endorsement is required when operating a school bus in an operation for which the endorsement is required. School bus applicants must also satisfy the applicable Passenger (P) Endorsement requirements.

Get Your CDL Quick offers individually available services for eligible applicants pursuing Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements, including applicable ELDT Behind-the-Wheel services, skills practice and evaluation, and qualifying vehicle rental for the Texas DPS CDL skills test.

Additional federal and Texas requirements apply to School Bus (S) Endorsement applicants.
