What is the School Bus (S) Endorsement?

A School Bus (S) Endorsement is required for CDL holders who operate a school bus to transport students to or from school or authorized school-related activities when the vehicle and operation are subject to CDL requirements.

Applicants seeking a School Bus (S) Endorsement must also satisfy the applicable Passenger (P) Endorsement requirements.

Depending on the vehicle and the applicant's circumstances, requirements may include:

  • Obtaining the appropriate Commercial Learner Permit (CLP)

  • Meeting the requirements for the applicable CDL class

  • Satisfying applicable Passenger (P) Endorsement requirements

  • Passing the required School Bus (S) knowledge examination

  • Completing applicable federal Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements

  • Passing the applicable Texas DPS CDL skills test in an appropriate qualifying school bus

  • Meeting any additional federal, state, or employer requirements applicable to school bus drivers

PASSENGER (P) + SCHOOL BUS (S)

Drivers operating qualifying school buses generally need both the Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.

The P Endorsement applies to qualifying passenger-carrying commercial vehicles, while the S Endorsement specifically applies to qualifying school bus operations.

ELDT REQUIREMENTS

First-time applicants for a Passenger (P) or School Bus (S) Endorsement are generally subject to applicable federal Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements.

ELDT Theory and Behind-the-Wheel requirements must be completed through providers listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry (TPR) before taking the applicable CDL skills test.

Additional Texas requirements may apply to individuals employed as school bus drivers. Applicants should verify current licensing, endorsement, medical, and employment requirements applicable to their specific school bus operation.
